Happy Weekend!
Hawaii must have been a strange place to be during WWII. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Asian Americans were looked on with suspicion — and in Feen’s neighborhood, her Japanese American classmate was ostracized, while many others were driven from their homes, stripped of their property, and interned in ill-equipped camps. Despite the rampant prejudice against Asian Americans at the time, this woman joined the Women’s Army Corps. Jama Rattigan has graciously shared a picture of her mother, the former Private Margaret Yang, who put on her duds and ignored the suspicious looks and did her job.
Pretty amazing stuff, in spite of everything.
