I like the fall,
The mist and all.
I like the night owl’s
lonely call–
And wailing sound
of wind around.
I like the gray
November day,
And bare dead boughs
that coldly sway
against my pane.
I like the rain.
I like to sit
and laugh at it–
And tend
My cozy fire a bit.
I like the fall–
The mist and all.

A lot of searching, but no leads on the author of this traditional autumn children’s poem. It showed up in Highlights a long time ago, and was in several poetry collections in the mid-70’s, but I can find no other poems by Dixie Wilson, nor any biographical information. Anyone know anything more?
Poetry Friday is brought to you by the letter N, and V, and the number 11. Oh, and it’s at Gotta Book today, whose cute Lament of Thursday the 12th is very cute.
Happy Fall!

This is *exactly* how it is here today with the remains of the storm blowing through. We should appreciate the gray in our lives…
Thanks for posting this. The poem is new to me, and I've never heard of Dixie Wilson. It really does capture that misty dreaminess that is November. The photo makes me a little homesick for Scotland. Pass the tea and biscuits!
no, wait, I got that totally wrong! i am living under an illusion. Don't know where that came from.
I learned this poem as a SONG in 4th or 5th grade, so I know a tune to sing it to!
the poet is rachel field.

I also know nothing about that poet, but I like that cozy poem, that is trying to get me offline to curl up and read with hot chocolate.
