For My Fellow Fictioneers

Even the certifiably insane Natalie Dee agrees: This edit’s been a long, strange trip, my people. I expect that the journey is only over until Ms. Knopf gets hold of my manuscript and begins to gently knead it, like cats do, until it is well and truly shredded. And then she’ll probably wee on it to mark her territory. Urg. Novel editing: not for crybabies. Since I generally think that’s what I am, it’s been very …empowering to find out that even our baby-bits can get a big fat callous over them. Whee!

Meanwhile, If anyone wants to play, it’s time for The Writer’s Digest Short Short Story Competition: Show Us Your Shorts! Writer’s Digest is now accepting entries in it’s 7th Annual Short Short Story Competition. We’re looking for fiction that’s bold, brilliant…but brief. The deadline is DECEMBER 1, 2006 and the top prize is $3,000 US. No idea what that is in Euros, pounds, or whatever, but… money’s money, eh?

Knowing that MY stories never manage to fit the framework of “brief” this may be up someone else’s alley, but their standards are such that once I got an Honorable Mention from them. Yes, this means that their standards are comfortably low! Go for it!
