MARE’s WAR LAUNCH: Another Chance to Win!

These are the women of the 32nd Company, WACs stationed at Fort Huachuca, AZ, in 1943. Mare never got to Fort Huachua, but she would have found it blazing hot, a drier heat than Bay Slough, and freezing cold in the winter.

Mare would have found a lot of girls like herself there… some even sharing her same name. If you are among the first five people a.) Named Mary or Lee [first name], b.) able to show proof of a female relative in the military, or, c.) able to show proof of a female relative in the military named Mary, you are eligible to receive a free signed copy of MARE’S WAR. (If you have a female relative in the the military named Mary Lee, I am seriously going to come up with some kind of a bonus prize.)

EDITED TO ADD: This giveaway offer ends 11 p.m. PST, Thursday, June 11th! However! There’s still time to snap a picture of MARE’S WAR on a bookstore shelf!

BOY, was I feeling the love yesterday. My buddy Adrienne gave me a shout-out on Facebook (and her friend Christopher made me laugh: Sorry, dude. MARE’S WAR: not so violent.) Sara said nice things about my handwriting and actually photographed herself with bedhead AND eyewear on my behalf. And at Jama’s blog — I got the soup, people. I GOT THE SOUP. AGAIN. I feel so blessed and loved and cuddly, even with the unexpected company that popped up yesterday. A former coworker of Tech Boy’s is on a sabbatical — eight weeks in Europe, natch! — and he and his wife just happened to be in Glasgow around lunchtime. (I have talked to these people twice in my life, and once was when we were introduced, and the other time was at a party. They’re really lovely, but if you could see my desk/house, you’d know the depth of my shrieks minutes before they arrived…)

Thanks for celebrating with me, and meanwhile, keep scanning those bookstore shelves!

  1. Jama: YES! A photo of Mom will do. In uniform? Go Jama's Mom! Woot! Thank you for serving.

Bookmoot: THANK YOU. What a lovely thing to hear.

  2. I had Mare's War on my stack for the 48 hour BUT decided to wait so I could read it without rushing. I'm almost half way now. Oh Tanita, it is just wonderful!!!!

  3. Tanita, you are always cuddly to me, with or without a new book out. 🙂 So, exactly what do you consider proof of a female relative in the military? Would you like a photo of my mom?

I checked my local B&N and Borders (don't have any indies nearby). They don't have the book yet. What's WRONG with these people?

I'm not good with unexpected guests at all. I would have done way more than shriek!

  4. Hang onto it for me until I get back to Scotland! You've already way exceeded yourself in sending me books; I ought to be ashamed of myself, lusting for more. But I'll be looking forward to reading it all the same!

  5. YOU!!!!!
Yes, YOU, Mary Witzl, are the VERY FIRST WINNER! WHOO HOO!

I have to admit that I'm slightly terrified of sending you a book to Cyprus; let's have a chat about an address that will *actually work*?!

    Hurray!

Adrienne: Somehow I did not think Chris was quite my target audience…

  6. ME!! My name is Mary, and I'm among the first five!! Have I really won a signed copy? If so, this is the best thing that's happened to me all week, and I've already bought a 5-kg bag of oranges.

Dear God, those poor women, wearing those uniforms and horrible gloves in that heat! I'm sitting here in 37 degrees dressed in cut-offs and a tee-shirt, utterly miserable.
