Last week, I got a note from a mom which made me smile. Her daughter was hurt when a classmate planned a party and said, rather off-handedly, “by the way, you can come if you want.”
Dude. Been there. Felt that.
But what brought me to a chuckle — albeit a sort of clutch-my-heart-almost-teary-eyed chuckle — was what she said about it. She told her mother, she “felt like Lainey when Sim treated her like an afterthought.”
!!!
That was the coolest writer-compliment ever.
Thanks, L., for making my characters live and breathe at your house. And don’t let the dorks get you down. We all do dorktastic things from time to time, but the good news is, most of the time, people don’t mean to be rude like that. Also, next party you throw? You’ll be the soul of awesome to everyone, because you remember how that feels.
